In a response to comments from US officials, including President Donald Trump, that the Islamabad talks collapsed over Iran’s refusal to commit to abandoning a path to a nuclear weapon, an Iranian official says: ″It is false. Iran’s position is clear. Iran is not seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, but it has the right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. This right is undeniable and must be recognized.″
However, Iran is ready to limit its nuclear activities as part of confidence-building measures, the official claims, including enrichment levels.
He does not elaborate on why the talks failed and speaks on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the closed-door discussions.
Iran has consistently denied seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. However, it has enriched uranium to levels that have no peaceful application and obstructed international inspectors from checking its nuclear facilities.
