New ultra-Orthodox party launches ahead of elections, seeks representation within existing Haredi parties

A new ultra-Orthodox political party called “The Haredi Public” has announced plans to participate in the upcoming elections in response to what it describes as a growing “sense of disconnect” between the Haredi community and its political leadership, the Haaretz daily reports.

According to the report, the fledgling party led by Beit Shemesh Deputy Mayor Moti Leitner says it represents working and new immigrant Haredim seeking greater influence within the existing ultra-Orthodox political establishment.

While estimating that it could win around three seats if it ran independently – below the electoral threshold – the party says its goal is to secure representation within major ultra-Orthodox parties United Torah Judaism and Shas, both part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition.

The Haredi Public reportedly pledges to address poverty and the issue of military conscription, while promoting core curriculum studies and employment opportunities in ultra-Orthodox communities, and identifies itself as part of Israel’s right-wing bloc.
