US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hold a second phone conversation in three days and discuss Israel’s ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
American Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro says via Twitter that the commander-in-chief “reiterated the United States’ condemnation of attacks by Hamas against Israel, and reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself.”

Obama expresses concern over the loss of Palestinian civilians and Israeli soldiers in the campaign. He stresses the need to prevent civilian casualties in the operation.
The Palestinian death toll in the past day stands at around 90, according to Hamas government spokespeople. Israel has lost 18 soldiers since launching its ground incursion into the Gaza Strip to destroy Hamas’s network of attack tunnels.
The president is dispatching US Secretary of State John Kerry to Cairo in order to reach an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to the November 2012 Egyptian-mediated ceasefire that ended Operation Pillar of Defense.
