Israel’s effort to stop Hamas rocket fire has entered its 13th day. And it has morphed, in the course of the IDF ground offensive launched Thursday night, into an effort heavily focused, too, on Hamas tunnel network.
Hamas gunmen emerging from one such tunnel yesterday morning into Israeli territory killed two IDF soldiers whose jeep happened to be patrolling in the area. A much worse attack was thus foiled, the army said, noting that material found at the scene indicated that the terrorists had intended to kill and kidnap soldiers and/or civilians in a major infiltration.
There is no sign of an imminent ceasefire, although Mahmoud Abbas is set to meet Hamas’s Khaled Mashaal today. The rockets are still battering into Israel, causing one fatality and injuring several more people yesterday.
