Presidential inauguration scaled back

Ceremonies marking the inauguration of Reuven Rivlin as the next president will be toned down in light of the difficult fighting in the Gaza Strip, Channel 10 reports.

Rivlin will officially replace Shimon Peres on Thursday.

Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein has been meeting with the prime minister, religious leaders, Rivlin himself, and other relevant decision-makers in order to strike the right balance in the ceremony. Edelstein weighed both canceling the event entirely and making do with a statement, and holding a regular ceremony in order to project to Hamas that life goes on as usual in Israel.

Opposition leader Isaac Herzog is calling for a full ceremony.
