Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar nominates MK Michel Buskila as the new deputy foreign minister, after Sharren Haskel announced her resignation from the post in protest of the Knesset passing a law banning the arrest and prosecution of Haredi draft dodgers.
Buskila, like Haskel, is a member of Sa’ar’s center-right New Hope party, which reunited with Likud last year. He currently serves as deputy Knesset speaker, a member of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, and chair of its Subcommittee on Foreign Policy and Public Diplomacy.
According to a statement from Sa’ar’s office, the nomination will be brought before the government for approval in a telephone vote this evening and, if approved, will take effect tomorrow evening following the completion of a mandatory 48-hour waiting period after Haskel’s resignation.
Under Israeli law, Buskila will formally assume office once his appointment is announced in the Knesset.
