US President Donald Trump will deliver a video address to those attending next week’s opening of the new US embassy in Jerusalem, a senior administration official tells reporters this morning.
Vice President Mike Pence will also address an event the Israeli embassy to the United States is hosting on the same day to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Israel’s founding.
Over the last several weeks, Trump had been toying with the possibility of flying to Israel for the second time in his presidency, saying he might attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony. But earlier this week, the White House released the names of the American delegation to the event and did not include the president.
Administration officials laud Monday’s scheduled opening of the new facility, perhaps giving a preview to at least one point Trump may make in his remarks. “We are extremely proud of the fact that we have been able to open the embassy, as the president likes to say, ‘ahead of schedule and under budget,'” one official says.
