Finance Ministry director general quits after Knesset approves state budget

Finance Ministry Director General Ilan Rom informs Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich that he is resigning from his position upon completion of the state budget passage in the Knesset.

Rom was appointed Finance Ministry director general in January 2025 to help strengthen Israel’s economic resilience during the war with the Hamas terror group in Gaza. During his tenure, Rom steered the state budgets for 2025 and 2026, led negotiations with the defense establishment over budget spending, and was also involved in the fight against black money alongside the Tax Authority.

“The Finance Ministry has been blessed with a top-notch professional manager who has contributed greatly to the management of the economy,” says Smotrich. “The macroeconomic vision that Rom brought, along with the long-term view and the assimilation of norms of innovation and progress, will contribute greatly to the Finance Ministry and the country.”

As a former senior official at the Mossad, Rom brought a macroeconomic and strategic perspective, formulating economic policy for the day after the war, the Finance Ministry says.

“I was privileged to contribute to the country during this busy and challenging period and to be a partner in the tremendous economic effort,” says Rom.
