Jews were targeted in 62% of all hate crimes in New York City last month, according to police data.
There were 29 antisemitic hate crimes reported to police and 47 total hate crimes.
Jews are targeted in hate crimes more than other group in the city, but last month saw a higher proportion of antisemitic incidents than usual.
There were four anti-Asian incidents, one incident targeting Black people, two Islamophobic incidents, three based on other religions, and eight motivated by sexual orientation.
The figures are released as New Yorkers head to the polls for the mayoral election.
Swaths of the Jewish community are alarmed by the expected win of far-left anti-Israel activist Zohran Mamdani because they fear his anti-Israel rhetoric will spur hatred against Jews.
The NYPD figures are preliminary and subject to change if, for example, an incident that appeared to be discriminatory turns out to have had other motives.
Hate crime prosecutions are relatively rare because prosecutors need to prove bias, a high legal bar.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
