Muezzin bill bruited again as minister hints at end to opposition
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleA bill to limit the volume of calls to prayer at mosques may be revived after opposition from an ultra-Orthodox party appeared to have buried it.
Health Minister Yaakov Litzman, from the United Torah Judaism party, may reportedly lift his objection to the bill if an exception can be included for Jewish rituals.
The minister had feared that the bill, approved by a government committee on Monday, would also limit sirens used to announce the start of the Jewish Sabbath and holidays.
“Discussions are ongoing,” Litzman’s spokesman says.
