Anyone wishing to visit the Western Wall or take a stroll along the beach in Tel Aviv can do so virtually, now that Google Maps Street View images of Israel are available online.
The 3D mapping project, which became accessible on Thursday, began several months ago with car- and tricycle-mounted cameras snapping photos from the streets of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa. Now that those images have been processed, viewers can take an intimate and panoramic look at Israel’s three largest cities.
To protect both national security and citizens’ privacy, Google agreed to skip sensitive facilities and blur peoples’ faces.
Officials have expressed the hope that the project will encourage tourism.
