Israel Police spokesman Aryeh Doron refuses to say police would abide by the High Court in case a ruling clashed with an order from National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

Asked repeatedly in an interview with Reshet Bet radio who police would heed in such a case, Doron answers: “Whomever the law of the State of Israel requires it to obey.”

The comment comes after the government on Sunday declared for the first time in Israeli history that it would not respect a High Court of Justice ruling, in a case about Israel’s commercial broadcasting regulator.

The court has previously rebuked Ben Gvir for denying adequate rations to Palestinian prisoners, and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has expressed support for petitions demanding the High Court order his ouster over alleged abuses of power.
