The US State Department says the five people killed in an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon on Sunday were not American citizens, contradicting an earlier statement by Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.

“While the situation is fluid, so far, indications are that the five killed were not US citizens. In fact, one had an unused immigrant visa petition in the past,” a State Department spokesperson says.

Israel said Sunday it was investigating a strike that the Lebanese health ministry said killed five people, including a father and his three children, in the southern Lebanese town of Bint Jbeil.

According to the IDF, the strike killed a member of the Hezbollah terror group, and also killed several civilians by accident. The military said it “regrets any harm to uninvolved [civilians], and works as much as possible to mitigate harm to them.”
