Terror not suspected as car hits pedestrians outside UK Eid event

British police said they arrested a woman after a car collided with pedestrians outside a Newcastle sports center, injuring six people. Police said the incident is not believed to be terror-related.

Northumbria Police said officers were trying to determine what happened outside Westgate Sports Center in the northern English city of Newcastle on Sunday morning. The ambulance service said three children and three adults were being treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

The police force said emergency services were at the scene and a 42-year-old woman has been arrested and is in police custody.

British media reported that an event was being held at the sports center to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

Last Monday a man driving a van mowed down Muslim worshipers near a London mosque.

Darren Osborne, 47, was charged Friday with terrorism-related murder and attempted murder, officials said.

Makram Ali, 51, died from multiple injuries following Monday’s attack near Finsbury Park Mosque in north London, and another 11 people were injured. He had collapsed with a leg problem and was being attended to by fellow worshipers leaving late-night Ramadan prayers at the mosque when the rented van careered into them.

That attack was the fourth in Britain in three months, killing a total of 36 people and injuring around 200. The three previous attacks were all Islamist-linked.
