The Nazareth Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday remanded into custody a 50-year-old resident of the northern city who is suspected of throwing acid in the face of a 15-year-old girl.

The victim was rushed on Monday evening to the Rambam Hospital in Haifa, where she was admitted in serious condition, anesthetized and hooked up to a ventilator.

A police spokesperson said that five more people were to be questioned in connection with the incident. Allegedly, the girl was attacked after she refused to marry a member of the man’s family.

The suspect’s attorney, Said Hadad, said his client denied the charges. Hadad said that the man “was at home last night watching soccer, after which he ate dinner with his family. He still does not understand why his name was associated with the incident.”

Hadad added that security cameras at the site of the alleged attack will prove that his client was not involved.
