Treasury budget chief quits in protest of government’s economic policies

Shaul Meridor resigns as head of the Treasury’s budget department in protest of the government’s economic policies in recent months.

“I can’t lend a hand to poor conduct taking place in recent months, which all Israeli citizens will pay a heavy price for in the coming years,” Meridor writes in a letter to Finance Ministry Israel Katz, according to the Walla news site.

He decries a decision-making process influenced by “narrow interests” and the “blatant contempt for staff work,” alleging the ministry’s financial tool box has been trampled on.

Meridor recently came under fire from Katz and Prime Minister Netanyahu for their plan to cut checks to all Israeli adults, regardless of income or whether they were negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
