Bondi Beach terrorist faces life in prison if convicted, police commissioner says

Naveed Akram, the surviving gunman who perpetrated the terror attack at a Jewish event on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, killing 15 people, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted, Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett says in a statement.

Akram, who was seriously wounded while carrying out the attack on Sunday, woke from a coma recently and was charged today with 59 offenses, including terror charges and 15 counts of murder. The other gunman, Akram’s father Sajid, was killed during the attack.

Barrett says the investigation into the massacre is continuing and sends words of reassurance to the Jewish community. She says there is “no ongoing threat.”

“It is hard not to be moved by the weight of grief that is hanging over Sydney,” she says. “It is a reminder of the cruel and hateful act perpetrated against the Jewish community. As AFP commissioner, I say to Jewish Australians, you do not and you should not share this grief alone.”
